How to Get Records from Polish Archives for Your Citizenship Application
Polish citizenship confirmation requires documents from Polish archives. This can be the most challenging part of the process, but it is very doable with the right approach.
Where to Look
State Archives (Archiwum Panstwowe)
Each region has a state archive holding civil records, church records, and administrative documents. Find yours at szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl.
Civil Registry Offices (USC)
For more recent records (last 100 years for births, 80 for marriages, 50 for deaths), contact the local Urzad Stanu Cywilnego.
Church Records
Many older records are in parish archives, especially for the period before civil registration in each partition.
How to Request
- Write in Polish (strongly recommended). Use a translator or template if needed
- Include: ancestor's full name, approximate date, place name
- Send by email or registered post
- Expect 2-6 months for a response
- Fees are modest (usually PLN 30-50 per document)
Former Polish Territories
If your ancestor was from territory that is now Ukraine, Belarus, or Lithuania, records may be in those countries' archives. A professional genealogist is highly recommended for these cases.
Professional Help
Polish genealogists who specialize in citizenship cases typically charge $2,000-$5,000 and can dramatically speed up the process. They know the archives, speak Polish, and understand which documents you need.
