Poland Doubles Citizenship Fees as Naturalization Rules Tighten
As of November 21, 2025, Poland has doubled its citizenship application fees. Here is what changed and how it affects descent-based claims.
New Fees
- Presidential grant applications: PLN 1,669 (up from PLN 800)
- Voivode recognition (descent confirmation): PLN 1,000 (up from PLN 600)
Naturalization Reforms
The fee increase comes alongside broader naturalization reforms built on four pillars:
- Longer residency: 5 years proposed (some want 10-15 years)
- Loyalty oath: commitment to uphold Polish law and constitutional order
- Citizenship test: history, language (B2 level), and social knowledge
- Tax residency: must maintain tax residence in Poland
Does This Affect Descent Confirmation?
The four-pillar reforms target naturalization only, not descent confirmation. However, the fee increase does affect descent confirmation (voivode recognition is now PLN 1,000). This is still very affordable compared to other countries.
The Presidential Grant Freeze Continues
President Nawrocki continues to approve very few citizenship grants. In early 2026, only 25 of 445 applications were approved. This affects the presidential naturalization track, not descent confirmation, but signals a restrictive political environment.
US Exclusive Citizenship Act
Some diaspora members have expressed concern about the proposed US 'Exclusive Citizenship Act 2025' which would theoretically ban dual citizenship. Legal experts are unanimous: even if passed, it could not cause loss of Polish citizenship or prevent descent confirmation. The bill is unlikely to pass in its current form.
