Italy 2026 Budget Law: Good News for New Parents Claiming Citizenship

The 2026 Annual Budget Law brings some positive changes for Italian citizenship applicants, particularly parents of newborns.

Key Changes (Effective January 1, 2026)

  • Three years instead of one to register a child's birth abroad and claim Italian citizenship (previously just one year)
  • EUR 250 fee dropped for birth registration citizenship claims
  • Minor children of Italian citizens born before May 24, 2025 can still obtain citizenship if parents make a declaration by May 31, 2026

What This Means

If you recently had your Italian citizenship recognized and have a young child, you now have three years from the child's birth to register them as Italian citizens. This takes significant pressure off new parents who are still gathering documents.

The removal of the EUR 250 fee also makes the process more accessible, particularly for families with multiple children.
