How to Find and Order Vital Records for Citizenship by Descent
The most time-consuming part of any citizenship by descent application is gathering documents. You will need birth, marriage, and death certificates for every person in your lineage — plus naturalization records to prove your ancestor retained their original citizenship.
US Vital Records
Each US state has its own vital records office. Here is what you need to know:
- Birth certificates — order from the state where the person was born
- Marriage certificates — order from the county or state where the marriage took place
- Death certificates — order from the state where the person died
- Naturalization records — request from USCIS (Form G-1041) or the National Archives
Italian Records
- Contact the Comune (municipality) where your ancestor was born
- Request certificato di nascita, certificato di matrimonio
- Many Italian communes now accept email requests
Irish Records
- Use the General Register Office (GRO) for civil records after 1864
- Church records for earlier dates — available through parish offices or IrishGenealogy.ie
Tips for Success
- Start with what you know and work backwards
- Use FamilySearch.org for free access to many digitized records
- Order long-form certificates — short forms are usually not accepted
- Budget 2-4 weeks per record request from US states
- Italian communes can take 1-6 months to respond
