Dominican Document Format Changes in 2025: What You Need to Know

Dominican Document Format Changes in 2025: What You Need to Know

As of July 1, 2025, the Dominican civil registry unified its certificate formats. If you are applying for Dominican citizenship by descent, this affects which documents you need.

What Changed

The JCE eliminated the distinction between 'acta inextensa' (long-form) and 'extracto' (short-form) certificates. All new certificates are issued in a single unified format.

Important Catch

Documents issued before July 1, 2025 in the old format are still valid for their original purpose. However:

  • The US Embassy still requires the old 'acta inextensa' format for pre-July 2025 documents
  • New unified certificates work for all purposes going forward
  • If you have old-format documents, check with your consulate whether they need to be reissued

What to Do

  1. If ordering new documents from the JCE, you will automatically get the new format
  2. If you have old documents, they are still valid but confirm with your specific consulate
  3. Keep copies of everything in both formats if possible
