How to Get Your Dominican Cedula and Passport After Citizenship

Once your Dominican citizenship is confirmed and your birth is registered, the next steps are getting your cedula (national ID) and passport. Here is how.

The Cedula

The cedula de identidad is your Dominican national ID card. It is required for virtually everything in the DR.

How to Apply

  1. Visit the JCE (Junta Central Electoral) office or a Dominican consulate
  2. Bring your Dominican birth certificate (acta de nacimiento)
  3. Provide passport photos and fingerprints
  4. Pay the fee (approximately RD$500-1,000)

Timeline

2-4 weeks when applying in the DR. Consulate applications may take longer.

The Passport

With your cedula in hand, you can apply for a Dominican passport.

How to Apply

  1. Visit the Direccion General de Pasaportes in the DR, or a Dominican consulate abroad
  2. Bring your cedula, Dominican birth certificate, and photos
  3. Pay the fee (approximately $100-200 USD)

What It Gets You

  • Visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to approximately 145 countries
  • Easier travel throughout the Caribbean and Latin America
  • Proof of Dominican nationality for property purchases, banking, etc.

Dual Passport Tips

  • Enter the DR on your Dominican passport
  • Enter the US on your US passport
  • For other countries, use whichever gives easier entry
